CartGuard – Anti-Bot & Cart Abuse Protection

Protect Your PrestaShop Store from Unwanted Bot Traffic, Fake Cart Activity and Unnecessary Server Load.

Your online store can have powerful hosting, plenty of RAM, an optimized database and advanced caching solutions, yet still become extremely slow when unwanted automated traffic continuously generates unnecessary requests.

CartGuard is a specialized PrestaShop module designed to identify, monitor, analyze and help control suspicious automated activity, particularly repeated shopping-cart visits, empty-cart inspections and excessive add-to-cart requests.

By identifying the IP addresses responsible for unusual activity and providing practical manual blocking controls, CartGuard helps store administrators reduce unwanted traffic, preserve server resources and maintain a more responsive shopping experience for genuine customers.

Less unwanted traffic. Better use of server resources. More responsive online stores.

Why Website Speed Matters

Website speed is essential for every successful e-commerce business.

Slow-loading pages frustrate customers, interrupt shopping sessions and can contribute to abandoned purchases. Website performance also matters for SEO, particularly through Google Core Web Vitals and other page experience signals.

However, adding more server resources is not always the answer.

Even powerful VPS hosting, database optimization and advanced caching cannot eliminate every unnecessary request generated by automated visitors. This is particularly relevant to dynamic shopping-cart functionality, which cannot always be handled by ordinary page caching.

CartGuard addresses this specific problem by helping administrators identify suspicious automated activity and control the sources of repeated unwanted requests.

Developed from Real E-Commerce Experience

CartGuard was developed after a serious performance problem affected four online stores.

Despite a powerful VPS server with 48 GB of RAM, database optimization, caching systems and additional performance improvements, the stores experienced extreme slowdowns.

Opening a page could take 40–50 seconds, while in the worst situations loading could take several minutes.

Both the Front Office and Back Office were affected. Customers struggled to browse products, while administrators had difficulty managing products, customers and orders.

Investigation revealed substantial amounts of unwanted automated traffic repeatedly accessing shopping-cart pages, inspecting empty carts and generating requests without genuine shopping intentions.

CartGuard was developed to identify this activity, expose the IP addresses responsible and provide administrators with practical tools to manage unwanted traffic.

After identifying and addressing the unwanted activity, the performance of all four stores improved dramatically.

This real operational experience shaped the development of CartGuard.

✨ Key Features

Advanced Empty-Cart Activity Monitoring

Repeated empty-cart visits can generate unnecessary application and database requests.

CartGuard records empty-cart visits and groups them by IP address, allowing administrators to identify visitors repeatedly opening shopping-cart pages without adding products.

The dashboard displays:

  • Total empty-cart visits.

  • IP addresses responsible for recorded activity.

  • Frequency of repeated visits.

  • Shortest interval between consecutive visits.

  • Previous blocking history.

A dedicated Empty Cart Visits by IP report provides additional information for investigating suspicious activity.

Fastest Empty Cart Detection

CartGuard calculates the shortest recorded interval between consecutive empty-cart visits originating from the same IP address.

For example, when two visits occur only 0.189 seconds apart, the unusually rapid activity becomes immediately visible.

The Fastest Empty Cart indicator uses color-coded classification:

  • RED: Under 1 second – extremely rapid repeated activity.

  • ORANGE: From 1 to 3 seconds – frequent repeated activity.

  • GREEN: More than 3 seconds – slower repeated activity.

  • GREY: Insufficient data – no measurable interval available.

The entire table cell is color-coded for easy identification.

Interactive Numerical Sorting

CartGuard supports interactive sorting through sortable dashboard columns.

The Fastest Empty Cart column uses numerical sorting rather than alphabetical text sorting.

Administrators can arrange IP addresses by the shortest recorded intervals and bring the fastest repeated activity directly to the top of the report.

Add-to-Cart Request Monitoring

CartGuard separately monitors repeated add-to-cart requests originating from the same IP address.

It calculates the shortest interval between consecutive add-to-cart requests and displays the total number of recorded requests.

Administrators can compare:

  • Total add-to-cart requests.

  • Shortest interval between requests.

  • Empty-cart activity from the same IP.

  • Available customer information.

  • Available shopping-cart information.

Empty-cart visits and add-to-cart requests are analyzed separately to preserve accurate activity information.

Customer Identification and IP Associations

When the relevant information is available, CartGuard connects recorded IP addresses with registered PrestaShop customer accounts.

The dashboard can display:

  • Customer name.

  • Customer email address.

  • Customer ID.

  • Multiple registered accounts associated with one IP address.

This helps administrators distinguish anonymous activity from activity associated with registered customers.

An IP address does not necessarily represent one individual. Customers may share public IP addresses through households, offices, shared networks and mobile providers. Customer associations are therefore provided as investigation information, not proof of individual identity.

Shopping-Cart Information

When available, CartGuard displays additional information about shopping carts associated with recorded visitor activity.

This can include:

  • Cart ID.

  • Number of products.

  • Number of distinct product types.

  • Available cart total.

  • Last available cart update.

  • Associated customer information.

Missing cart information is clearly distinguished from confirmed empty-cart information. When reliable cart data is unavailable, the dashboard displays UNKNOWN – no cart data.

Intelligent Activity Recommendations

CartGuard analyzes recorded activity and provides recommendations to help administrators prioritize IP addresses that may require investigation.

Available classifications include:

  • HIGH.

  • REVIEW.

  • No block recommendation.

Recommendations consider available activity information, including repeated empty-cart visits and unusually short intervals.

An unusual activity pattern alone does not prove malicious behavior. CartGuard provides information to support an informed administrator decision.

Manual IP Blocking – Complete Administrator Control

CartGuard gives administrators direct control over IP blocking.

The module does not automatically block visitors simply because an activity indicator is red or an IP address receives a suspicious activity recommendation.

Administrators can:

  • Manually block IPv4 addresses.

  • Manually block IPv6 addresses.

  • Configure blocking duration.

  • Inspect current blocking status.

  • Review previous blocking history.

  • Unblock previously blocked addresses.

  • Manage the monitoring watchlist.

The module also includes safeguards for Google-published crawler and fetcher IP ranges.

Once an unwanted IP address is manually blocked, subsequent requests from that address can be stopped according to the configured blocking mechanism.

This provides a practical way to control unwanted traffic while keeping the final decision in the hands of the store administrator.

Watchlist Management and Historical Records

CartGuard includes tools for managing IP addresses that require monitoring.

Administrators can remove addresses from the watchlist and restore them when necessary.

Removing an IP address from the watchlist does not delete its historical events or blocking records.

This preserves useful historical information while keeping the main monitoring dashboard organized.

Traffic Statistics and Empty-Cart Burst Detection

In addition to individual IP monitoring, CartGuard provides statistical information about recorded activity.

Available statistics include:

  • Total recorded events.

  • Unique IP addresses.

  • Empty-cart visits.

  • Add-to-cart requests.

  • Country-based activity.

  • EU / Non-EU event totals.

  • Empty-cart activity bursts.

  • Unique IP counts within monitoring windows.

CartGuard also identifies empty-cart activity bursts using 60-second and 5-minute monitoring windows.

These indicators help administrators recognize periods of unusually concentrated activity.

Statistics represent events recorded by CartGuard and should not be confused with total website visits or complete server traffic measurements.

JPresta Page Cache Technical User Recognition

CartGuard includes special recognition for technical customer accounts created by the JPresta Page Cache module.

Instead of displaying long generated account names and email addresses, CartGuard identifies these accounts as:

JPresta Page Cache – TECHNICAL USER

This keeps the monitoring dashboard readable while preserving the underlying information.

Technical accounts are not deleted and do not automatically trigger IP blocking.

Local IP Country Detection with MaxMind GeoLite2

CartGuard supports local IP country identification using the MaxMind GeoLite2 Country database.

The dashboard can display:

  • Detected country.

  • Country flag.

  • EU / Non-EU classification.

Country information is obtained from a locally installed MMDB database. CartGuard does not need to send every visitor IP address to an external geolocation API.

Important MaxMind Setup Requirement

The GeoLite2 Country database is not included in the CartGuard installation package.

Each customer must create their own free MaxMind account, download their own GeoLite2 Country database in MMDB format and install the database in CartGuard.

A separate installation guide explains the complete process, including account registration, database download and installation.

Country detection is approximate. VPNs, proxies, mobile networks and routing conditions can affect the results.

🛠️ Lightweight Architecture

CartGuard was designed to provide focused monitoring and IP management without unnecessary software complexity.

The v0.5.18 distribution has a compact software footprint:

  • Approximately 42 KB compressed ZIP archive.

  • Approximately 122 KB of extracted module files.

  • Local GeoLite2 database lookups.

  • No mandatory external analytics platform.

  • Direct administration through the PrestaShop Back Office.

The GeoLite2 database is installed separately and is not included in the module archive.

CartGuard records selected events through PrestaShop integration and stores relevant monitoring information in dedicated database tables. The collected information is then organized into practical reports and activity summaries.

Actual resource consumption depends on store traffic, hosting configuration, database performance and recorded activity.

⚡ Works Alongside Existing Caching and Optimization Solutions

CartGuard does not replace caching modules, database optimization or server configuration.

These solutions have different purposes and work best together.

Caching helps reduce repeated processing of content that can be served from cache.

CartGuard focuses on identifying unwanted automated visitors that repeatedly generate requests, particularly around dynamic shopping-cart functionality.

A well-optimized server still needs effective management of unnecessary traffic.

Together with appropriate hosting, caching and database optimization, CartGuard can help reduce unwanted application workload and contribute to a more responsive PrestaShop environment.

🏪 Who Should Use CartGuard?

CartGuard is particularly useful for PrestaShop store owners experiencing:

  • Repeated automated access to shopping-cart pages.

  • Large numbers of empty-cart visits.

  • Unusually frequent repeated requests.

  • Suspicious automated browsing activity.

  • Unnecessary traffic consuming server resources.

  • Performance degradation during traffic spikes.

  • Slow Front Office and Back Office operation associated with unwanted traffic.

  • Difficulties identifying IP addresses responsible for repeated activity.

It is especially relevant for stores that already use powerful hosting and caching solutions but continue to experience performance problems caused by unwanted dynamic requests.
